Tutoring Level : Elementary School

Encompasses Kindergarten through 5th Grade.

Reading

Skills are taught using a highly sequenced multi-faceted approach. A student is initially placed at his/her reading level. Sight words, phonics (phonemic awareness) and fluency are developed through a step-by-step process that involves mastery of each skill. As the student gains skills, the level of difficulty is increased. Through this process we are able to help students become confident, independent readers. In addition to a wide variety of instructional reading materials, we also incorporate games and multi-sensory activities to reinforce skills and to maintain a positive approach to the learning process.

Writing

Students are taught to develop their writing skills through a step-by-step approach. Brainstorming ideas, construction of solid topic sentences and supporting ideas are an integral part of our program. As students reach fourth and fifth grades, a five-paragraph essay is introduced including an introductory paragraph with a strong thesis statement, supporting paragraphs and a concluding paragraph. Over time, a variety of writing styles and topics are introduced, using both school assignments and supplementary materials.

Spelling

The supplementary spelling program used at Basic Skills Tutoring, Inc. focuses on phonemic patterns, syllables and "word chunks." This method allows students to learn a specific pattern that may be applied to multiple words. In addition, words are obtained from the students’ own writing. Routine practice and review help reinforce learned material in an effort to help the student store the information in long term memory.

Math

Math facts and computations are introduced and practiced using a variety of methods that include visual memory techniques, individual instruction and games. Problem solving (word problems) are also practiced using straight-forward strategies to help students learn new concepts. Our one-to-one support has been an effective method to help students gain the math skills needed in their classrooms.

General Organization

We help students establish a system (notebooks, folders) to organize school assignments. We encourage the use of academic planners so that students learn to record assignments and establish a plan (short and long term) to complete work by required due dates.

Standardized Testing

Practice for the 4th grade WASL (Washington Assessment of Student Learning), ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam), and Standardized Achievement Tests is available as requested. For each of these tests, we use practice materials specific to the individual test. We help students become familiar with the format of the test, help students develop strategies for successful completion of the test and review and reinforce reading, writing and math skills.
